Why Do Millions of People Watch The Office Each Week?
When you watch a television program like NBC’s The Office you sort of place yourself in the office at a desk in the corner observe and experience everything going on around you. It’s magnetic to see and wander what’s going to happen next. Many people feel so much apart of this show that they talk about it at their “real” office, spouting off quotes from the latest episodes like, maybe talking about “Schrute Farms Beets”, or instead of answering yes, you would use the Michael Scott version….”yayshhhh.” People also want to own apart of that culture, that’s why there are t-shirts, posters, and other keepsakes that people can buy to remind them of the feelings they get when watching the show. Who wouldn’t want to be wearing a Dunder Mifflin warehouse shirt or having a Dwight Schrute bobble head on their desk? I’d guess the fans of The Office either see themselves or someone they work with as one of the characters and can relate to them? Although, I would not want to think of myself as the Dwight at my job we do have one. You know that one guy who is just not normal. He is a volunteer sheriff, has a collection of hidden weapons around the office and feels that he has superior intelligence than anyone around him. I find that the more people I talk with who love The Office are drawn into the purposeful comedy. But I think it goes deeper, like what I mentioned earlier. You can empathize with the characters, even the character that has no lines The Office itself. Their thoughts and expressions carry through the TV and into your brain where you process the same feeling of Dwight’s calculator in jell-o trick or how Oscar felt when Michael “outed” him in front of everyone. It has got to be more than just the laughs and planned comedy of the show that keeps people coming back for more. Which is genius, by the way? And that is why I believe that millions of people tune in each week to feel apart of something. Apart of a group of people that make us laugh, feel like a dork, and still be human just like the rest of the world. What quote from the TV show The Office would you like to see on a T-shirt? Since this show started 4 seasons ago there have been thousands of quotes thrown around the next day at your “real” office. Some of these quotes already appear on t-shirts and are sold everywhere from Soho in New York to eBay. But what saying or quote would you like to see on a tshirt? The most famous tshirt from The Office has to be the Dunder Mifflin logo shirt. Then I would guess the next famous one would be the “that’s what she said” tshirt that Michael Scott is cited for making this remark that would be replied by anyone making a statement that could be turned into a sexual euphemism. Boy that was hard to get out…..that’s what she said
